Understand every word right where you found it.

Select a word or expression as you read in English. Field Words tells you what it means in that sentence, translates it, and brings it back just as you're about to forget it.

Free, with no account. For Chrome on desktop, B2 to C2. Android and iPhone coming soon.

From any page to your memory

  1. Catch

    Catch what you find

Select text and a small menu appears. If it gets in the way, turn it off in settings; right-click still works.

  2. Understand

    Understand it in its sentence

Not a list of senses: what it means there, its translation, and whether it's formal, casual or an idiom.

  3. Review

Come back at the right time

Spaced repetition brings each word back just before it slips away, with the sentence you caught it in as a hint.

A dictionary gives you twelve meanings. You need the one in this sentence.

Past B2, the hard part is no longer the word on its own but how it shifts with what's around it. So every catch remembers its sentence and where you found it.

  • She picked up Italian in a year, just from living in Rome.

    aprendió

  • Can you pick up the kids after your meeting?

    recoger

    A text from a friend

  • Sales finally picked up in the spring.

Review the word, not a loose flashcard

Every card keeps the original sentence as a hint, so you remember the usage and not just the translation. FSRS works out the dates, the same kind of algorithm you can turn on in Anki.

  • Only the word at first: try to recall it, and ask for a hint if you need one
  • Four answers, each showing its next review
  • Keyboard all the way: H for the hint, Space to reveal, 1 to 4 to rate

Your collection, every word in its place

Search, edit or delete whenever you like. Each catch appears as a dictionary lists it, "served" as "to serve", and keeps the sentence and the page it came from, so you can go back to the original if you need to.

Try it with sample words

The words you catch keep turning up

When a caught word appears on another page, Field Words marks it there, even in another form, such as "undermined" for "undermine". Rest the pointer on it to see what you kept: its meaning, its translation and the sentence where you first found it.

  • The search runs in your browser and sends nothing
  • The page's content stays as it was
  • On by default, and one switch in settings turns it off

Soon: catch from any app on your phone

Reading in another app? Select the sentence, press Understand or Catch and tap the word you don't know. The card opens over what you're reading, and you go back to it straight away.

  • Chrome on desktop

    Available

The whole product: the menu on any page, visual answers and your words marked as you read.

  • Android

    Coming soon

Understand and Catch appear in the menu when you select text, usually under the three dots, and in Share.

  • iPhone

    Coming soon

Through the Share menu, as iOS doesn't let apps into the selection menu.

The app catches, understands and reviews, with your words on the phone. They won't meet the ones on your computer until sync arrives, and visual answers stay in the extension for now.

What you read stays yours

Nothing leaves unless you ask

The extension sends nothing until you press Understand or Catch.

Only the word and its sentence

Never the page's address or its title.

No account, all on your machine

Your catches live in your browser and, with the app, on your phone. Syncing them will be optional.

The essentials stay free

Catching, understanding and reviewing work without an account. Premium brings visual answers and, as they arrive, a fresh sentence for every review, reading at your level and writing practice, for €5 a month.

Questions

Do I need an account?

No. You can catch, understand and review without one, with your words in your browser. A free account gives you more AI lookups, and will sync across devices when that arrives.

What level is it for?

People who already read in English, B2 to C2, and keep running into expressions, nuances and idioms a translator doesn't clear up.

How is it different from a translator?

A translator gives you an equivalent and stops there. Field Words tells you what it means in that sentence, keeps where you found it, and asks you again with spaced repetition.

Does it work on my phone?

Soon. An app for Android and iPhone is on its way, but it isn't in the stores yet. It catches from other apps, understands and reviews, with your words on the phone. Until accounts arrive, they stay apart from the ones on your computer. Today, Field Words is an extension for Chrome on desktop.

What gets sent, and to whom?

Only when you press Understand or Catch, and only the word and its sentence, to generate the meaning with AI. Never the page's address or its title.

Can a website see which words I've caught?

It could, if it looked. Marks are drawn by the browser, and a page's own scripts can read them, so a site could tell which of its words you've caught. We send it nothing. If that matters to you, turn the marks off in settings.

Can I take my words to Anki?

You will, with a CSV export on every plan. It's on the way, and not available yet.

The next word you don't know already has somewhere to go.
